Mace, just barely

February 6, 2018

The Victor Ludorum was held at the Druids Lodge Polo Club last weekend. The Salisbury Club hosted the Watersfield Trophy, an important tournament in the Hurlingham Polo Association's Winter Schedule. Four teams arrived to the club founded by Giles and Tae Ormerod to take part in the competition. The final was played on Sunday 28, after the semifinals the day before.

Sunday saw the two winners of the first stage clash in the deciding match: Mace (Anthony Bond, Benny Nott and Eden Ormerod) and Thomson Local (Benjie Bradshaw, Tom Meyrick and David Ashby). Mace started out strong, having a huge 7-1 lead at half time that seemed for certain they would maintain, but Thomson Local managed to stage a comeback, tailing by just three in the final chukker (15-12). The last few minutes were thrilling for boththose playing and those watching. However, Thomson Local fell short, and Mace managed to just barely take the win by 19-18 when the final bell rang. Benny Nott took home both both individual prizes, being named MVP and his mare Gamble, BPP.

“I am very happy to win the Watersfield Trophy. Anthony and I were quite determined to put in a good performance in this tournament, having been unsuccessful in the 8 goal before Christmas. We practiced at a faster pace in preparation and got it right with the horses this time around. Playing match polo is a big jump from chukkas if you are out of practice! I was very pleased for Benny too, he is a young player who played a big game, particularly in the final," said Eden Ormerod to CLICKPOLOUK after their triumph.
